Co₂ monitoring / capnography

Indications

· as an adjunct to endo-tracheal intubation

· confirmation of correct placement of endo-tracheal tube

· hypercapnia

· to assist difficult ventilatory management

· ARDS

Procedure

· insert CO2 module into bedside monitor

· attach CO2 cable and sensor

· press SET-UP key on bedside monitor

· scroll down to CO2

· initial message will be warm up

· wait until warm up message disappears 1-5 min

· press Cal key

· place sensor inline ventilator side of HME

Monitoring

· maintain continuous digital and waveform display

· titrate ventilation therapy to et CO2 35-45mmHg

NB. The sensor is not disposable. Please soak in 70% alcohol for 30 minutes after use, allow drying and replacing together with cable into case marked et CO2
